For Thickening (Optional)

Equipment

Method

Combine Ingredients
  1. In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of minced onion, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup of soy sauce, and 2 tablespoons of mustard. Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir well to ensure all ingredients are evenly mixed.
Bring to a Boil
  1. Continue to stir and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, which should take about 3-5 minutes. You'll know it's boiling when small bubbles form on the surface.
Simmer for Flavor
  1. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer. Let it cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Thicken the Sauce
  1. If you prefer a thicker consistency, whisk in 1/2 teaspoon of xanthan gum or 1 tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved in water. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until thickened.
Blend for Smoothness
  1. Transfer the mixture to a blender or use an immersion blender and blend until completely smooth.
Cool and Store
  1. Allow the sauce to cool for about 10-15 minutes, then transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate.
