  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
  2. Trim fresh green beans and blanch in salted boiling water for about 4 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath.
  3. In a skillet, cook diced bacon until crispy for about 5–7 minutes, then drain excess grease.
  4. Melt unsalted butter in the same skillet, then sauté chopped onion for 4–5 minutes and add minced garlic for 1 minute.
  5. Sprinkle in flour and cook for about a minute, then gradually whisk in milk and broth until thickened (4–5 minutes).
  6. Mix in brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, then stir in heavy cream and cheeses until melted.
  7. Fold in half of the bacon and fried onions into the cheese sauce, then pour over the green beans in the casserole dish, mixing gently.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes, then top with remaining bacon and fried onions, baking for another 5 minutes until golden.
  9. Let it set for 5 minutes before serving warm.
