- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
- Trim fresh green beans and blanch in salted boiling water for about 4 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath.
- In a skillet, cook diced bacon until crispy for about 5–7 minutes, then drain excess grease.
- Melt unsalted butter in the same skillet, then sauté chopped onion for 4–5 minutes and add minced garlic for 1 minute.
- Sprinkle in flour and cook for about a minute, then gradually whisk in milk and broth until thickened (4–5 minutes).
- Mix in brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, then stir in heavy cream and cheeses until melted.
- Fold in half of the bacon and fried onions into the cheese sauce, then pour over the green beans in the casserole dish, mixing gently.
